PROCLAMATION NO. 141

DECLARING THE PERIOD JANUARY 19 TO 24, 2002 AS “ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES WEEK”

WHEREAS, the Philippines is hosting the 11" ASEAN University Games in Manila from January 19 to 24, 2002, coinciding with the 27" anniversary of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines;

WHEREAS, the hosting of the 11" ASEAN University Games is an opportune occasion to showcase the country as a gracious host of international sports events, and a safe and friendly tourist destination;

WHEREAS, the 11" ASEAN University Games serves as a groundwork to the Visit Islands Philippines 2003 marketing and promotion campaign for the country;

WHEREAS, to ensure the success of the first international sporting event of 2002, the cooperation of both the public and the private sectors is paramount;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare January

19 to 24, 2002 in the national sports calendar as the “ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES WEEK”.

The Organizing Committee of the 11'" ASEAN University Games shall take the lead in the planning, management, implementation, and conduct of the sporting events. The Committee shall ensure a warm welcome to all delegations and manage the Asean University Games in a manner that will positively showcase our country to our ASEAN neighbors and the world.

The heads of appropriate departments, bureaus, offices, agencies, local government units, government-owned and controlled corporations, and instrumentalities of the government, particularly the Department of Tourism, the Philippine Tourism Authority, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Commission on Higher Education, are hereby directed to provide full assistance to the Organizing Committee of the 11" ASEAN | University Games.

Non-government organizations, the University Athletics Association of the Philippines, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the private sector are hereby encouraged to lend their cooperation and support in making the 1 1" ASEAN University Games as a dynamic vehicle for the formation of desirable values and the promotion of peace and unity through sports among the youth of ASEAN.
