BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES ° PROCLAMATION NO. 256

DECLARING THE THIRD WEEK OF JUNE OF EVERY YEAR AS IRRI- GATION WEEK.

WHEREAS, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), which was created by virtue of Republic Act No. 3601 on June 22, 1964, is at the forefront of our national program to develop the country's agricultural potentials;

WHEREAS, irrigation in an agriculture-based economy like ours is the basic imput for increased agricultural productivity;

WHEREAS, irrigation has been proven to be the key factor in our continuing efforts to increase production of the basic staples in order to meet the rising consumption requirement of the country's fast growing population;

WHEREAS, irrigation expansion also help catalyze development in the countryside and thus pave the way for progress for the rural areas; and

WHEREAS, there is a manifest need for the people to appreciate irrigation development's vital role in the total development efforts of the government;

NOW, THEREFORE, |, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the third week of June of every year as Irrigation Week, under the auspices of the National Irrigation Administration.
