PROCLAMATION NO. 269

PROCLAIMING THE PERIOD FROM 1988 TO 1998 AS "THE DECADE OF THE CENTENNIALS OF FILIPINO NATIONALISM; NATIONIIOOD AND THE.PHILIPPINE REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT"

WHEREAS; the centennials of many of the heroic acts and historic events during the watershed of Filipino nationalism fall within the decade 1988-1998: the centen- nials of the culmination of the period of propaganda and reform the founding of the Katipunan; the martyrdom of

' Rizalg the launching and triumph of the lst Phase of the

Philippine Revolutionj and the declaration of Philippine Independence;

WHEREAS; the period 1888-1898 is associated with some of the greatest names in Philippine History: Lopez Jaenay Del Pilar; Rizal; Bonifacio; Jacinto; Aguinaldo> Mabini> Luna; and Ricarte and many others;

WHEREAS; it is necessary to instill in the hearts and: minds of the people the spirit of nationalism and struggle and the ideals of liberty for which our heroes unselfishly dedicated themselves;

WHEREAS; the celebration of these centennials of Filipino nationalisms nationhood and the Philippine Revo+ lutionary Movement should also prove to be a fitting period to ponder on those who struggled for liberty prior to 1888 and those who defended the liberty won subsequent to 1898; -.

NOW; THEREFORE; I; CORAZON C. AQUINO; President of the Philippines; by virtue of the powers vested in me by law > do hereby proclaim the period 1988 to 1998 as "The Decade of the Centennials of Filipino Nationalism; Nationhood and the Philippine Revolutionary Movement".

For the purposes of formulating plans and devising

‘ways and means for the effective execution of appropriate

activities and/or projects for the commemoration of "The Decade cf the Centennials of Filipino Nationalism; Nation- hood and the Philippine Revolutionary Movement"; there

is hereby created a Centennial Committee to be composed. of:

An Undersecretary of the Department of Tourism designated by the Secretary of Tourism - Member

A Representative from the Office of the President - Member

The President; Philippine Historical Association - Member The Centennial Committee is empowered to call upon any office; agency or instrumentality of the government for

cooperation and assistance in the discharge of its functions.
