BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE FHILIPPINES PROCLAMATION NO. 296

DECLARING THE FIRST weEK OF JULY OF EVERY YEAR &5 NWaTUReL LDISASTEX CUNSCIOUSNESS WEEK

WHEREAS, the Philippines is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, such as typhoon, flood, earthcuake, tornado, landslide, storm surge, volcanic eruption, tsunami and drought;

WHEREAS, the Filipino people, by being conscious of these ever threatening calamities, can better appre- ciate a disaster preparedness program aimed at savirg lives, protecting property, preventing needless suffer- ings and minimizing damages during natural disasters, thus mitigating their effects; and

WHEREAS, the government recognizes the velue of setting aside a designated period for the people to focus their attention on the need to prepare for natural disasters;

NOW, TREREFCRE, I, CORAZON C. AQUINO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do nereby declare the first week of July ef every year as Natural Disaster Consciousness Week to be observed by schools and communities throughout the country.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council, the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council and the various local Disaster Coordinating Councils shall take the iead in the célebration of this week.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I nave hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.
