PROCLAMATION NO. 87

DECLARING THE PERIOD FROM AUGUST 17 TO 24, 2001, AS NATIONAL MICROFINANCE WEEK

WHEREAS, the elimination of poverty is one of the pillars of good governance;

WHEREAS, providing affordable credit to the marginalized sectors of society is an essential ingredient towards the alleviation of poverty;

WHEREAS, microfinance banking aims to help the poor secure microcredit without collateral;

WHEREAS, it is proper to extend due recognition to the important role microfinance plays in poverty alleviation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the period from August 17 to 24, 2001, as National Microfinance Week.
